The daughter of Richard, Duke of Normandy and his wife Gunnora. Emma married Ethelred in 1002, and gave birth to two sons, Albert and Edward (the future King Edward the Confessor). When the Danish invaded England in 1013, Emma escaped to Normandy with her sons. Her sons remained there, but Emma returned in 1016 to marry the new king, Canute.
